Any thoughts on the new episode of Porridge?

Post by JohnnyRobbo » Mon Aug 29, 2016 12:44 pm

Last night I watched the new episode of Porridge based around Fletcher's grandson, also known as Fletch. Aside from Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Porridge has to be one of my all time favourite TV shows. So I was a bit anxious that this new incarnation wouldn't measure up. Needn't have worried, though... Clement & LaFrenais came up with the goods. Lots of little nods to the original series, involving tins of pineapple chunks etc.

There was also a drippy prison officer in the mould of Barraclough, a stern Scottish McKay type and an updated version of genial Harry Grout. The actor playing the new Fletch was really accurate in his mannerisms & speech to the point where you could easily believe he WAS a blood relative of Norman Stanley Fletcher. All in all, really good. I'm hoping the BBC run with it and commission a series.

And a final note... the Prison governer was called "Hallwood" - I've noticed this is Clement & LaFrenais' writing before. In the film "The Bank Job" (written by Dick & Ian), Jason Statham's character, a dodgy east end car dealer is called Terry Leather. They must just have some names they enjoy using :D

Ok as a one off for the novelty value, but fairly chuckle free throughout I thought.
