Ridiculous Emmerdale

Post by Auf Wiedersehen, Pet » Sat Oct 22, 2016 8:46 am

Don't watch this, I now know why.
All the press it's getting I had to watch the recent clip posted on social media of the crash etc. Had to stop after 45 seconds, meaning I nearly wasted a whole minute of my life. It was so bad and ridiculous.

I used to work in London years ago and we had this new bloke come work for us. You had to share a room at the hotel and the first night he asked....."D'ya watch WestEnders?......"

I got lucky, as my work colleague slept in the same room the following week, turning up late at the Hotel, the new fella answered the door with no clothes on.......

Soaps used to be OK when there was just three episodes a week. Now it's six for Emmerdale, and Corrie is about to introduce a sixth. It's too much.

I was a fan of Emmerdale waaaay back when it had a gentle charm but now I find it as unwatchable as the other soaps, a combination of ludicrous storylines and po-faced scriptwriters bashing viewers over the head with their laughably right-on take on the correct social attitudes for the great unwashed to hold.

Coronation Street was another must-see soap - I recall an NME writer in the 80s referring to Corrie as Alan Bennett for the masses and I wouldn't say this was hyperbole - however that too has been hijacked by the ishoos brigade and also used as a cash cow by Granada for many years in the horribly American tradition of squeezing every last grubby buck from a franchise. The rot set in at Granada when Gerry Robinson took over from David Plowright, which has seen the once proud company descend from a first-class broadcaster whose track record included World In Action and Brideshead Revisited to a manufacturer of the tattiest dross.

Back to Emmerdale, and although I was usually a fan of Victoria Wood's, she had a lazy dig at the programme when she inferred (none too subtly) that nothing really happened in t'village. Well, that's not necessarily a bad thing, and it could be argued that it takes a great deal more skill to maintain the interest of the viewer when nothing much seems to be going on than to invent scarcely credible situations, a la Brookside, where Phil Redmond lost the plot - literally - and created the execrable Hollyoaks (now that should've ended up under the patio).

Not that I'm blaming Victoria Wood for Emmerdale becoming cartoonish, as unfortunately I think that has more to do with the (cliche alert) dumbing down of culture generally and the mindset which has popularised trashy gossip magazines, Simon Cowell and the Kardashians.

To think all Amos Brearley had to contend with was bickering with Mr Wilks and fretting about local "acid drop parties". :)

I was just looking her up on Wikipedia. She's played by Lesley Dunlop.

"She is married to Emmerdale co-star Chris Chittell who plays Eric Pollard."

Nepotism, eh?
