Favourite Auf Pet baddies?

Who’s your favourite Auf Pet baddie?

For me, got to be Pringle... He also gets the best comeuppance: “Wall meet again!”

Ally Fraser. So brilliantly portrayed by Bill Paterson.

Fraser. With an honourary mention for Tarquin Pearce - he made the fourth series sparkle with his skullduggery.

Jeffrey Grainger, not really a 'villain' more of a con man. I was wondering how they arrived at his name. Jeffrey as in Archer? Grainger is the name of a market and historic area in Newcastle as well as a large residential landlord based there, so maybe some inspiration from these places?

Not sure about the origins of the actual name but the character is a barely-even-disguised pastiche of Jeffrey Archer. Politician who writes books, has dubious (if any) morals, has been in prison, and lives in a penthouse on the banks of the Thames. Series 3 came out barely a year after Archer was sent to jail.

TBH it's one of the black marks against series 3 for me. They created a fantastic villain in Fraser and later an equally strong bad-guy with Tarquin Pearce. Grainger seems like lazy writing to me, which is a bit sad really.

Glad we're in agreement about the origins of Grainger's name, but I think it was a very good move to have him as not the 'hard' man type like Paterson, McGowan or Startup. Those types would hardly have been intimidated in prison or needed Oz to save them from getting accosted there. Very well portrayed or course by Bill Nighy, Series 3 was all about, for me, some of the characters in role reversal, at least at the start. Denis, no confidence and down on his luck, Barry lots of confidence and with a glamorous wife, Neville with his own company, but Bomber and Moxey's situations basically unchanged from earlier series.

Good point about the role reversal. It's also interesting how Dennis, Barry and Nev (and Oz) had almost reverted to type by the end of the series, almost as though being with the lads brought their true personalities back.
