Would you have confronted Magowan?

Post by totti » Sat Mar 08, 2014 4:56 pm

Currently watching Auf Pet from the beginning and was wondering, given his hair trigger temper and the fact that Neville didn't do to well against Magowan, would anyone here have been brave enough to confront Magowan and chuck him out of the hut? I'm no coward but at 5 feet 6 and weighing 10.5 stone I probably wouldn't have lasted much longer than Nev. Anyone here reckon they could have given him a good scudding??

I hate confrontations and always try to avoid them. I totally admire Neville in that scene as he is not a coward. Nev's voice is trembling - yet he still goes ahead with what he believes in, knowing that Oz and Bomber is not there to back him up. Earlier in the episode, Neville said that he will back Dennis up. Seems a very loyal lad wor Nev. I likes it!

I'm a bit more sneaky me, hate direct confrontation. I'd make him believe he'd got the better of me, wait for him to go to sleep, then set fire to the bastard!

I think Mac had a bully's respect for Nev for doing that. After all he only gave him a nut and a dig in the ribs - not exactly a hiding was it?

Well, I hate violence in any form. Knowing that I could never take it up with MacGowan physically, I would probably try talking to him. And why not? It would probably be best to try to convince him with words. This way Mac could hopefully calm down and "come to his senses"...

Otherwise I really wouldn't know how I could ever "confront" him...

if a McGowan character was in my presence, talking could always be tried.. Otherwise, leg it.. Failing that, fight dirty and find something to swing about!

I'd be like Barry; scared and intimidated by Mac.

I even get a bit scared of him watching him on the TV, which is a testament to Michael Elphick's excellent portrayal of him.

I think it was a testament to Elphick himself. I met him in a pub once - very scary man!

But lovely as anything. Had a great chat with him about all his classic roles (Macgowan, the poacher in Withnail, and Jimmy's dad in Quadrophenia) - he was very nice.

Best thing for them to have done was all stand up to him and try to stay together until Bomber got back.
