I've often read on various threads about the Spain episodes not being as good as the earlier episodes - their points would usually focus on Gary Holton and rewrites.
Personally, I didn't really noticed the lack of quality in the Spain episodes. I'm aware that the lads were working and sleeping in a more comfortable environment but there was still enough suffering, bad news, twists, conflicts and a hilarious script (pheromones comes to mind). So I'm really interested if anyone can explain exactly how did the Spain episodes suffer rather than why.
I posted in the other thread that it's really only the last 10 or 15 mins of the final episode where I lose interest. Everything up to and including Oz winning the lottery is still classic Pet to me.
I enjoy each episode of Series 2 equally as much as each episode of Series 1. Even with all the disasters for cast and crew, I reckons its a belting story. Some silly lines but who am I to critisize ? And the way they worked around Gary's death, for me is a tribute to all concerned. Neville was moaning at the very start of Series 1 and he was moaning at the very end of Series 2, Pet magic !!!

Barry's talking to Hazel, who was making tea in the kitchen.
"Where do we eat in Newcastle ?"
"... why they call ya Monkey Wrench." Made no sense because the scene had been cut.
Halwood asking Dennis to take a suitcase full of clothes back to Spain.
Barry, "Waynes invented a new form of currency, wages for sex."

I thought it was my own phone for a mo, sounds identical.
To be fair, the ring of the phone in that particular scene is very unusal for the 80s... it
comes from a posh kinda phone that you had to buy yourself... Most people didn't bother
and had a normal phone that was supplied like the one in Barry's office, with the ring tone
most people would associate with these times... "She rung off... just as I got there like"
is how 90% of phones rung in the 80s, in most houses I'd say
The Spain Episodes worked for me, and it was only until the full story on the net over the last how ever many years that you start looking into it more deeply.
Also, I've only just realised that Gary isn't in the scene in the departure Lounge at Newcastle airport, as its a well written and acted scene I just never though twice about it!
I noticed Gary's abscence straight away in that airport scene, on first viewing i was expecting one of the others to say something about him, but it never happened..
