Series 1 to Series 2.

Post by Auf Wiedersehen, Pet » Wed Apr 16, 2014 4:48 pm

Now, is it just me, or does there seem to be a huge change from Series 1 to 2?

I'm not talking about the show itself, but as the world is portrayed on screen. It seems to me that watching Series 1, its like watching something from the 70's, and although Series 2 was shot just 2 years later, the jump in how the world is seen as a whole is more like a new era, and a 10 year jump in how the world looks?!

I know a lot will be to do with it being filmed in Germany and the hut and we really don't see much of 'The World', but Series 2 seems to have been filmed about 10 years later, and I bet if you told someone who had never seen the show, they would believe you.

I know many of you will be like 'what's he on about?!....'
But, does anyone see what I mean? :?

Aye. I think it's the clothes - Oz has smartened up a bit, and Nev has gone from '70s tower block teenager to sport-loving middle aged man. :D

It's certainly an interesting observation. I think I might know the answer to this one. Two reasons really. The first thing you will notice that has changed dramatically is Neville and Barry's face. There is a significant difference. As if ten years really has past. Fame means you can afford to buy more cakes and hair dye. Second of all, you have to realise that the now Nottingham studios will be using different technical specifications regarding filming equipment - cameras, lens, lights, tape and so on (or upgraded). The weather may also play a role in this too. Perhaps brighter weather? That's three reasons. 8-)

Aye, definitely a different feel.

Take the opening scene of S2, Barry taking the photo. Not only do the lads look different, Bomber wears a hard hat, although I think I read that was to hide his change hair or something.

And Wayne is wearing shades! Happened a lot in S2 but never S1.

I think in series 1 the characters were more raw and believable. I still love series 2, but Oz seems to have turned into a bit of an arsehole, as opposed to the loveable, funny, rude, slobbish entity we encountered in series 1.

And Mox seemed to be a bit childish, compared to his (harder) personality in S1. In fact, the Mox in series 3 seems more akin to the Mox of series 1. Whereas series 2 and 4 Mox seem quite like each other.

I guess it was a case of people seeing the characters in series 1, seeing what made them tick and focusing on those aspects, so they kind of became caricatures of their former selves.

Anyway, S2 is still an amazing piece of TV. But S1 still shines for me :)

On the subject of the S2 opening scene, did they rebuild the hut for it? That hut looks v much like the 'real' thing.

Was series 2 not in the planning as series one was finishing? Just thought they may have shot the first scene before the hut went up

I don't think so cos Barry in particular looks a lot older in that scene than in series 1 - and Nev

No the scene from S2 was shot at Lenton lane studios, and separate from S1 all together.
That hut from S2 scene still stands today!

I love the grittiness of the first episode - how 'dark' everything seemed which mirrored England at the time. How Barry turned into the businessman , how Moxey seemed to descend back into his old ways , Bomber and Oz were yet to reveal where they were at , Dennis was drinking or driving Ally around , Wayne had not changed despite claims of marriage and Neville finding life tough on the dole. Beautifully supported by the various spouses and the realism of it stands the test of time
