Took French at school but only because the teacher was a lass from Viet Nam. Can only remember a few words. And I know one sentence in Dutch. Wait till BA hears about this !

Is your real name Danny Baker

Did 'elementary' French and German at school. Hated (the) French (still do). Enjoyed German and quite a bit of it stuck with me. Currently learning Dutch in preparation for a planned relocation to Holland next year

Its surprising how similar Dutch is to German - its almost the same language spoken less aggressively
What Dutch do you know Tracy?

Re: Learnt a new language?
You speak more Dutch than I do then Tracy. I took French for a term because I had too. Ended up understanding less than when I started.
My daughters Spanish teacher was a German. What's all that about?

Re: Learnt a new language?
Well, living in Spain for 10 years I did learn a hell of a lot of Spanish. The area we lived in was in Catalunya, so my daughters first language was Catalan, only learning English at home, reading and writing. Catalan was the first language of the area, but if you spoke Spanish they would to you, just like being in Wales.
I did learn a vast amount, and I would have loved to have been totally fluent, but didn't have the time or energy to get fully stuck in. People used to ask if I could speak Spanish, and my answer was always the same.
I could talk, read and understand all about windows and basic construction because of my job, but take me to a hairdressers and I would be lost.....
I think in the UK we are very ignorant to other languages, and don't do enough in School. At the age of 4 my daughter was speaking/learning Catalan, Spanish, English and French.
Amazing really.
I would still be there if it wasn't for the recession kicking the nuts out of the Spanish economy in 2008, and this website wouldn't even exist.
"We'd be in limbow!...."

Re: Learnt a new language?
I speak a fair bit of German, a reasonable amount of Spanish, and bits of Italian, French and Greek. Did French GCSE at school, and learnt Greek for 18 months at night classes, but I've forgotten loads now, sadly.
It seems the more I learn of one language, the more I forget of another. If I could choose to have one talent above any other it would be to be able to speak multiple languages fluently.

I need some slippers, and some soap

Re: Learnt a new language?
I learned German and a little bit of French at school. At the moment, I am trying to learn to speak Polish. It is really difficult. There's no real reason why I chose to learn Polish; I just fancied trying my hand at learning a language and I know a few Polish people from work.
