Series 3 & 4

Post by Addy » Wed Feb 06, 2013 11:37 pm

Going through the site and seeing Tim's locations vids for series 2 and the affection for both the series 1 & 2 shows, do you think it's about time we showed a little more appreciation of the later series and had a more general spread on the merits of series 3 & 4?

I think personally series 3 stands up well and is a great story in it's own right and even series 4 has it's merits and also if we are worrying about what Tim is going to do with his time when he's finished shooting the locations vids for Series 2, that we pack him off to as many of the series 3 and 4 UK locations...lol, only joking Tim.

Seriously though, if we wish to push on with site development, then all the series of AWP (namely 3 &4) deserve some effort too and these are the ones that i feel are underdeveloped at the present moment as regards to forum topics.

I for one, love all the series, and I am not just saying that because I run the site. I do have favourites and those are Series 1 and 2, but there is still some magic for me in the latter series.

I have tried very hard on Twitter and Facebook to bring in the new series, but end up getting comments such as.."That's not Auf Wiedersehen, Pet...." Now, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

The problem I have, is I have to make the site appealing to fans, and they simply want to see things from the original 2 series.

You have to give them what they want.

Series 3 is a bit hit and miss. A bit downbeat sometimes. Just was great to have the lads back.

Series 4 I thought was brilliant. The first 3 eps especially good.

Loved the first part of the special but disliked the second part (except the ending of course).

For me I enjoy them in a serperate way to series 1 and 2. It's kind of like Dr Who, there's the old stuff which I prefer over the new but I love the new stuff for what it is.

Same programme but different if you know what I mean :)

I prefer the first two for the same reason as many other fans im sure.. Gary was in them and the writing was sharper, and the general 80's acting and uknown-ness of the main bunch back then was just as it should have been in some ways.. i film my video's bacause i live in the main area itself, either way i go i can get to a location in a short time, whether Bunny, Redmile, Bottesford, or the town center.. but with Series 3 and beyond its going to be alot more difficult, as im an Unemployed scumbag at the mo.. and petrol is bloody costly, plus with the mrs in Full Time employment and house being her's im entitled to sod all benefits.. so getting to the places can sometimes be hard.. so with Middlesborough and further up north places its almost impossible at this time.. We need Mr Hill or some Geordie's out in force..

I like all the series.
I mentioned on the old site that tv nowadays is different to the early/mid 80s.
You could never let a scene like Neville & Helmuts Dad (series 1) play out for 2-3 minutes nowadays.
TV exec's would just wouldn't allow it.
Also, auf pet story lines had to be out of this world for series 3 and 4.
They cold never have 6 episodes of seperate stories, it's all continous for tv now.

But thats why i love series 1&2, the charm of every episode is perfect

I like them all, but Series 1 & 2 will always be special. Was over the moon when it came back for Series 3. You have to remember that times and TV has changed a lot since the 80s. Can you imagine ITV commisioning a 13 part drama with 7 unknown actors in the lead these days? NO WAY! I also think that the writing of Clement/La Frenais is second to none. I would love a fifth series, but it won't happen due to members of the cast no longer with us. I know it would put all the garbage on TV these days to shame, just for the fact that it is written by them.

I am with Addy on this one, this site is about AWP, not 1 and 2. I can remember the excitement and the anticipation when 3 came out and I loved it. Everyone knew the actors had aged and the story lines were going to be different. It was years later, GH was dead and TV as a whole had changed.

The storyline was excellent, all the actors were good excepts Nails. He played his part brilliant but his new posh voice and mannerisms were terrible.

The storyline was contemporary with illegal Immigrants, drugs, sexuality, organised crime groups etc etc. anybody who thought it was going to take place in a hut was not on this planet. Reading "Living alright" it is explained that they HAD to move on and update the story.

Series 4's concept was again excellent. Working on embassies abroad again threw the lads together in unpleasant circumstances. Again living alright has so much insight into the thought process that was going on with Rodden etc, it is a must read for all AWP fans. Some may say that parts of the storyline was a bit far fetched, but can anyone say that it could not have happened?

There is more to AWP than 1 and 2 and we are, as fans, all the better for it. If this is the OFFICIAL AWP site how can we only cater for / discuss 1 and 2?

Don't get me wrong Lee the main site does have all the series there but I think as administrator you have to be neutral. This is a fantastic site and it is THE site for AWP, and should cater for all things AWP.

No Rodders you are spot on, but I do hope you see what I mean about giving the fans what they want.
Like I say I have tried, and I will try harder to integrate the other series in, without hopefully getting any backlash from the fans.

Another small problem is, there is more to find on the older series than the newer ones, and you would think it was the other way around, but its not.

Anyway, thats not an excuse, and I will and hope the rest of us try and bring in the latter series.

Nobody is stopping anyone TALKING about any series here.. ALL the series should be included yes, as with any topic, you dont see my site just concentrating on SCREAM, and not the other three films.. with regards to the locations videos i do though i stay on Series 2 because thats what is near me and accessible to my range.. so that is what i do.
If i could and had the money i would be going round the other places too, well where i could get at least..

To be honest i must admit series 3 & 4 didn't get under the skin like 1 & 2 did, but i've since made the effort to watch 3 & 4 again and give them some time and i think it helped not to watch 3 & 4 after watching 1 & 2 as a lead into, if you know what i mean, i've tried to take them as on there own merits.

And they are enjoyable if you can possibly put 1 & 2 behind you.

The trouble is 1 & 2 were such strong series, that i don't think you can ever top it. If 3 & 4 had been produced without knowledge of the first two series, i think they've stood up quite well since watching them again.

It certainly provoked a debate anyway...lol

Here's why I think Series 3 & 4 are flawed:

AWP was about 7 down-on-their-luck blokes who had a magical chemistry with each other. They were all different but all contributed. The language, the banter, the facial expressions, were superb. They could have made 10 more episodes just set in the hut or at the manor, and you know it would never have gotten stale. It's why we watch S1&2 again and again.

Then 15 years passed and the characters had CHANGED - and one was dead. Yes, people change, and how each of the 6 changed could reasonably happen I suppose. But those changes are what did it for me. Look at what they did to Moxey - for some reason he had turned into a laughing stock by S3 - a caricature. And the writers had so little for poor Pat Roach to do that they conjured up an unlikely romance for him.

And - crucially - even if the writers had kept the lads circumstances unchanged, they were a lot older - and not the same people from the 80s that we continue to enjoy so much.
