Re: How often do you watch Auf Pet?
Spain just loses the flow a bit too much for me. I used to always rate all of series 1 the best but after several viewings I came to appreciate series 2 a lot, so much so that I probably now rate the first half as the best out of all the episodes.
I don't know why really there's just something about the Thornley Manor episodes. It's only the lads together taking over the town and having run- ins with Pringle and other locals as opposed to Spain when they have their ladies with them and they don't seem to really do as much. Perhaps it is because it's the only real block of episodes that take place on home soil makes it special, just the lads going to Asda is fun to watch. Also I'm glad they took the decision to save the footage of Gary and I wouldn't change that but because of this the Spain episodes feel very choppy and incoherent.

Re: How often do you watch Auf Pet?
Here's my take on why the show went downhill with the Spanish eps:
1) There was no sense of hardship once they got to Spain. They started out dossing down at Barry's, then at the Barley Mow they were unwelcome guests, then they slummed it at the manor, then kipped at each others houses in Newcastle. We couldn't empathise with them working in the sun or hanging at the beach. Having them stuck in the hotel with the OAPs was a p*ss poor attempt at getting us to feel sorry for their 'plight'.
2) The lads were rarely all together in these scenes. Nev and Den were with their missuses, Barry was often with Hazel. The lads even got separated on the way to Gibraltar. They always worked best as an ensemble - big mistake by Ian and Dick, I think.
3) The indoor scenes lacked the atmosphere and "sense of location" of the Barley Mow and the manor. The Lenton studio 'Spanish' sets seemed very cheaply put together.
4) Gary
5) The plots just got very silly. Mistaken for bank robbers, Oz winning the lottery, being chased by customs. Amazing that these were written by the same people as the earlier S1 and S2 stuff.

aaahhh, yes, I think I see what yas mean. Spain sort of became a slapstick comedy rather than a drama comedy. You have given me a new perspective. Looking forward to watching it again and linking all the comments. Hope to hear more ... Yas all very AU Fait !!!

I think the Spanish scenes were maybe loads better in their original state, but with Gary and the re-writes and the time they had to do it they lost some of the quality.. and genuine story/writing.. Pressure i suppose..

Re: How often do you watch Auf Pet?
I dip in and out of all series, often these days on youtube, when something relevant to a particular episode has happened in my day, even if it's just a quote that comes to mind.
However, one of my traditions is to watch 'Home thoughts from Abroad' and to make sure I have a chicken curry (albeit out the microwave) popodoms, and lashings of cold lager whilst I watch!
