Barry in Germany.
I've often wondered why the writers decided that Barry would own a motorbike. I can imagine Wayne having one (unless that's because I saw Quadrophenia) but Barry? When I see Barry in series 2, I always forget he ever rode one in series 1 because he doesn't look the type. I wonder if they choose him to ride that motorbike because he did look out of place and a total prat with those goggles on and helmet? Or were they thinking: "Okay, Barry's sensible and would choose something very practical to travel around in a foreign country to see the sites. Okay lets do that. Find some horrible goggles".

I think its because he liked to be independent, with a bike there's less limits.. the fact he looked daft just fitted well with the character.

It is true in Series 1, that the lads all kept saying he a lunatic driving the bike the way he did. In Series 2 however, your'e right, you could never seen him as a bloke who rode a Triumph, with his Blue Suit and all that. Also, the lads never said, "Where's the bike Barry?"

Re: Barry in Germany.
Aye it did Brendan...
It seems I'm mixing up fiction with reality here, because Tim bought the bike in real life, so I knew it still existed...that and too many Sherrys....

Re: Barry in Germany.
Up until about 25 years ago, a lot of young single men owned a motorbike simply because it was a darn sight cheaper to run than a car. It was also an excellent way of getting around the West Midlands as the main roads get congested very easily! My father is of a similar age to Tim Spall and he had a motorbike for many years and only bought a car when my mother made him!
