Oz & magowan

Post by Merle haggard » Tue Nov 19, 2013 5:26 pm

One thing I've never understood in the 2nd episode 'who won the war ' oz gets fired straightaway for causing a ruck in the bar with them German scaffolders.

Yet grunwald doesn't sack magowan when he did the same thing in that bar & is even arrested.

Why the double standards

I dont think Grunwald was at all intimidated by Oz. So firing him was nay bother loike. But he lived in fear of McGowan !

Possibly because Magowan's episode didn't involve workers from the site. The one in the bierkeller with Den did, but he'd already been sacked by then.

Also Magowan was a "good worker", whereas Oz would always "antagonise people for no good reason".

Besides, it was Ulrich rather than Grunwald that sacked Oz. "Alright, he's a hard nose. It's his job man"

Mr ulrich " at the end of the day you'll find the same amount of bricks laid here as any other part of the site "
Think oz was equally a good grafter as magowan just thought oz got treated a bit unfairly

Herr Ulrich had learnt his mistake from prematurely sacking Oz and was loath to upset the Germans again so let MacGowan have a long leash as it were. However when his antics caused Herr Grunwald to have his 'family' Sundays to be disturbed, steps had to be taken.

It seems to me that when MacGowan was sober he was very good at his job, it was the drink that made him what he was, sadly for the actor, Michael Elphick life imitated art eventually.

I remember reading somewhere that his mrs had died and that started him off, sad account really on both sides, as the character and in real life.. the character was all good as long as he was sober most the time, would be a good bloke to have on your side.. I always liked him in Boon as we saw a different and good side of Elphick showing he really was an 'Actor' as such..

Oz got the Spanish Archer because he was always heard by Grunwald and Ulrich on site slagging off the Jormans and purposely antagonising them, and the fight in the bar was the final straw for Ulrich who probably saw this as the perfect opportunity to get rid.

Whereas Magowan was made out to be a good worker who got on with the job, all of the trouble he caused happened off site and out of work hours so i doubt they could have done much about it, plus the fight in the bierkeller took place after he left the site and was working as a bouncer in a German bar.

So the reason I think Oz was given the boot was because the trouble he caused happened on site and in work hours, whereas Magowan tended to cause trouble out of work hours and off site.

Although Merle Haggard makes a good point which I hadn't thought of before, surely something would have been done about him smacking Pfister.

I wonder if Pfister just accepted it because of the fact he was nigh on 7 hours late with the wages, probably never told Herr Ullrich.

I must say that I do feel a bit sorry for Magowan! :(

Nobody seems to like him... When I think of the "Alien" episode, the only one who gets along with him is Oz, who is even quite impressed with Magowan's ability to play darts...

Yes, I think that Oz and Magowan, they both had a lot in common.

Always wondered what Bomber would have done with Magowan had he been around during that episode. Magowan certainly took advantage of his absence.

Pfister was the agent, self-employed & not a Beco employee, so really there wasn't much he could've done against Magowan, other than taken taking taking him through the civil courts. Not really worth it, it was hardly ABH or GBH, just a little smack.
