Series 4
This is one of those series I have a thing about, and watch from start to finish over and over.
When this aired I was living in Spain, and watching it back reminds me of those hot nights you could go out, next to nothing on, and have a great time.
The scenes of the lads in the bars, do take me back, although many of those scenes were filmed in the UK, anyway.....
Comparing this to Series 3. Series 3 felt rushed in some parts, where as Series 4 seemed to just go a bit more smoothly. We never got to see the Ambassadors Residence finished, but the running of episodes and time between the story lines felt smoother.
I know a lot of fans feel/felt it was over the top with Neville being a spy, but it worked well I feel, and we also got to see Bomber smack someone in the mush...
Its a great series to watch, and the incidental music which plays over Oz and Ofelias romance gives me the tingles, its pretty touching stuff, well I think so anyway.
Love it or hate it, I for one think it has a great feel good factor to it when watching it.

Re: Series 4
I would love to see the instrumental music for series 4 turn up one day. Excellent music at the end.
I quite enjoyed watching Neville being a spy. I personally thought it was much more unconvincing seeing Oz getting off with Ophelia. It did get on my nerves a little bit watching him sit there staring at her ballet movements with that soppy look on his face. This is the same guy who bonked and married that bog-standard tart Marjorie, also knobbed that pensioner Mrs Chatterley and not to forget that he also boned the likes of that dumb Geordie Vicki - who thought rape was on the restaurant menu. He used to walk around the hut with his hands inside his greasy underpants. Then give him a smart suit to change into for series 3 and suddenly Leonard Osborne pulls more beautiful birds then James Bond.
I also thought Moxey had changed too much for me in series three and four. In series one, I get the impression he is more respected amongst the lads. He's a man of the world in 'Last Rites' telling Barry that he's had a shallow life. Tells Oz where to go in 'Suspicion'. Yet in series 4, he says stupid things (e.g aliens), often told to shut up and seems to act more like a bairn as the episodes go by. This is how I see it anyway. Just my opinion. Absolutely love Barry in series 1 and 2 and I liked his smugness that appeared in series 3. But by series 4, his special friendship with his very understanding and sensitive friend Leonard seemed to be too far away from the Barry and Oz we knew in Germany and Thornely Manor.
Mind you, series 3 and 4 certainly did have a great feel good factor to it when watching it.

Re: Series 4
mmmmmm ok, just finished series 4. Really enjoyed it; Oz being back to being Oz, well almost. Bomber looking well and getting a few good lines, "I transgressed myself but theres a cost !" "Oh yes, and where do you think your going ?!" Nev being a spy. Yes I liked that comedy thing and Mox with Seymour. Wyman and Tina, more fun in the Rum soaked sun. AAHHH but what I didnt like was the way Oz left Ofelia. Come on ! He finds the love of his life only to give in to her brother ? BOLLOCKS !!! Yes, Barry needed to get oot of jail. But our Oz was never going to crumble like he did ! He would have told Ofelia that things were going to have to go on ice to please the Cubos. She would understand and play along. They keep in touch with notes being sent to and fro. It takes a few weeks and the job is finished. Then its all back to Blighty. Well, Bomber to Arizona. A few days later, Oz is straight back to Ofelia. He sees Raul, gives him a kick in the Santaria shells, puts on his Zorro mask and rides off with Ofelia. The Cuban Press get hold of the story. Louis Sandoro [?], Castro's man they got the bath from, reads the story and recognizes Oz from the group and when he gave him and Nev a ride back to town. He has a word with Fidel who OKs the relationship. Raul is given the word to back off, Oz and Ofelia are free to be in love. She continues working for the Ballet while Oz gets a job working for the Cubos, renovations etc. Again, jacked by Sandoro. This would be the fighting Oz we know and love. So it would bollocks up The Special but I would rather see Oz with happiness than The Special anyway.
The happy couple eventually marry and all the lads are present along with Rod who his dad asks to be best man ! [ and he doesnt wear a dress ! ] Ofelia has no children as her career sees to that. But they are happy. Howzat for a happy ending ?! Yea I know, bollocks !!!

Re: Series 4
I think series 4 is the weakest of all the series. It has its moments and there are some great one-liners in there but, come on, when would Oz ever fall out with Dennis? And if he did, there's no way Oz would stretch it on for as long as he does; he comes across as nothing but a petulant school-kid. I enjoy watching it to spend time with the characters, but I don't think it's fit to wipe the boots of the first two series.

Re: Series 4
On first viewing was less than impressed but after seeing it a few times really like it. I also feel that Barry is more like his oldself in this series than in Series 3.

Re: Series 4
I was lucky enough to meet Chris Fairbank between Series 3 and 4 (he was at a Classic Car Show with his young son) and he stopped to have a quick chat. He said that they accepted that Series 3 wasn't as good as they would have liked and that Series 4 would be a lot more polished.

It was lovely, my only regret is not getting a photo of the event "You don't need to focus its automatic".

Just watched all this series again this week for the first time in years. Better than I thought it was to be honest, really enjoyed it. Also watched the two part special, the very last scene with Den, Nev and Oz going back to Germany is something special indeed. Definitely a lump in the throat moment.

Re: Series 4
I think it's a grower. Wasn't too enamoured by it first time round (after loving S3, on the whole), but it just seems to improve on each viewing. Watching it again now, 2 episodes in, & really enjoying it!

Re: Series 4
I have often thought that series 3 and 4 will eventually age like a fine wine also. But at present, I see series 1 and 2 as a complete classic. Because I love the nostalgia you see. Don't you see? It's the nostagia that makes the difference.
