The Toffee Factory!

Post by Howard Radcliff » Wed Oct 09, 2013 8:58 pm

I passed this building the other day (August 2013) and thought I’d take a pic. It’s what I always perceived to be the entrance of Ally Frasers office and ‘Scanda Sauna’ (tee shirts available in the shop!). In reality, the two locations are some 160 miles apart!

The building is located in Ousburne near to Newcastle’s quayside and was once a cattle sanitarium, then a lard warehouse, then a sweet factory (Maynards) before it was severely damaged by fire in 1992. Much of the buildings shell has been restored with its core being replaced with a new office complex containing offices and multipurpose rental space within.

What is pretty cool is that a piece of Auf history remains – the chimney. Although it’s not listed as such, it is on the City’s local list as one of the few remaining industrial chimneys of its type in Newcastle. During the design stages of the new development it was decided the chimney should stay and be incorporated into the scheme as it was of ‘local’ and ‘historic’ interest.

It’s at night when the development comes to life with an interchanging lighting sequence illuminating the chimney like a ‘glow stick' as a symbol of Newcastle’s vibrant nightlife!

So there it is, Auf Pet history illuminated for all to see!

Top of the bill, that. I prefer the 'then' picture though, me. It's 'cos I'm a soppy old sentimentalist. Don't you see? it's the nostalgia, that's what makes the difference. Dee-ah me, I'll be getting the family photograph album oot next!
