Oz v McGowen

Post by Pingpong_Pippa » Wed Jun 02, 2021 6:24 pm

One thing I’ve always wondered about ‘The Alien’ (S1 EP9) is why Oz is intimidated by McGowen.

Oz gets on with Mac early in the episode (Mac buys Oz a drink). And, later, when Oz is told to turf Mac out the hut, Oz lets Mac stay because Mac’s a good darts player (and the lads have got a match coming up against the army). But, generally, it seems Oz is frightened of Mac. I don’t recall Oz ever being physically intimidated by anybody else at any other point in the show, not even Big Baz, a much bigger bloke than Mac.

What’s everybody’s take? A minor plot hole? Or is there something I’m missing?

(Incidentally - or maybe not incidentally - it’s also one of my least favourite episodes in the first series.)

I thinks it's a plot hole, me, like Bomber does.
Last rites was maybe my least favourite in Series 1

Think there was a thread for weakest episodes. I voted Last Rites as well. It's the plot, mainly - got more holes than Moxey's dartboard.

Welcome aboard OSP and Pingpongpippa btw :P>

On topic - I've no idea why Oz was shown as being scared of Macgowan, other than the fact that writing out both Bomber and Oz from the entire episode would have made it too obvious.

But I think Elphicke just about made Macgowan lunatic enough to make it believable that Oz was at least very wary of getting into a fight with him. Oz isn't that tough anyway - he was scared off by that bloke from the brewery just cos he could lift them barrels up with one hand!

And he looked none too sure of himself when a raging Dennis steamed towards him in that heated discussion about his wife (never underestimate an angry shortarse). And what about that eric who put his head through the pinball machine! Come to think of it, Oz was a bit of a two-pint rambo really

Aye, ‘Last Rites’ is a weaker episode. Mind, I love Oz’s storyline. Bomber mishearing “porn” as “corn” cracks me up far more than it should.

Bomber being so offended by those videos as a family man was astounding, considering how he loved the brothels and women in general.
It was a mad episode

Not half. How about Wayne getting a cab from Tilbury to Hemel Hempstead?!

I think Oz would be worried about Big Baz but because he thought he saw his mate in danger (At the time) he decided to act quickly. Mac was never going to attack Oz so Oz would keep his distance
