Tarquin and Gary are settling down to listen in and glad of the rest after manhandling speakers and amplifiers to the satisfaction of the musicians in Stefano’s nearby holiday home.
Tarquin :” It was good advice from that chap, not to give up the day job!” Gary laughed .
Gary :” You didn’t give a good impression when you dropped that wee speaker.”
Tarquin :” My talents lie outside of brute force I’ll have you know.” There was the sound of laughter from the party in Stefano’s .Then a pause while apparently Maria was serving canapés.They heard Heather Lane’s voice in answer to a question.
Heather :” I’m not sure Stefano, I believe he discharged himself. We heard afterward that the hospital had found traces of benzodiazepine in his blood.” Stefano obviously found this highly amusing and laughingly made a comment about a loving wife.There was another question made of someone called Gustav. Gary and Tarquin assumed this was the third man they had seen.
Stefano :” Gustav, have you that sit rep on the Buenos Aries people?” Gary looked at Tarquin with wrinkled brow and whispered “ Buenos Aries people?” Gustav answered.
Gustav :” All the cross references like you asked sir and there is one , maybe two good hits.” In the background Gary had picked up another conversation.
Gary :” That was Pru talking to Stefano.”
Tarquin :”What did she say?”
Gary :” Hold on ,she’s talking again.”
Pru :” ……No, I never think about it. Life is too short, when someone lets you down there’s no going back.” Tarquin looked at Gary .
Tarquin :” What the hell is she talking about?” Gary shushed him .
Stefano :”……I understand, and when did you realise Heather had been right all along?”
Pru :” I’m not sure exactly .Why do you ask ?”
Stefano “ I am also cautious ,like you, in terms of criticisms of friends and loved ones. It is so sad to learn one has been deceived .Loyalty is very important to us ,to all of us.” They lost the rest of the conversation in the sound of laughter. Heather Lane could be heard replying to a question from Gustav. Then Pru was talking.
Pru :” I can’t say that there was any one thing in particular it was just the general adulation that I found so sick making.” There was more laughter ,then Gustav was speaking.
Gustav :”I gather you’re not a big fan ?” More laughter.
Pru :”Why are you so interested in Christian Norris?”Suddenly you could have heard a pin drop.Tarquin glanced at Gary and they both winced.” Have I said something wrong ,why are you all looking at me?”
Stefano :” Do not be concerned Prudence. You are not to know .Here we do not hold Christian in such high regard. I would like to hear more about your time with OED. Please come and sit with me .” At this Tarquin gave Gary the thumbs up and Gary smiled. There were no more surprises although they listened for an hour or more, when they both sat up in surprise at the sound of breaking glass and a cry of pain from someone sounding suspiciously like Maria.
Gary :” I was just thinking things were getting boring.”
Tarquin :” Yeah I was waiting to hear something ,you know, mind blowing until just now.” Then it was Maria’s turn to speak.
Maria :”I’m very sorry sir .I assumed you were taking the plate from me.” The voice they heard was not one they had heard until now, unmistakably Chinese.
“Stefano my expectations were not high but I assumed that your staff would be at least house trained..”
Stefano :” My apologies Linghui,I will arrange for your clothes to be cleaned.Please come to my room.” They could hear Maria in tears and Pru offering encouragement, and then Heather Lane was in full flow.
Heather :”If you worked for me I would dismiss you immediately, you clumsy girl.What were you thinking. Mister Linghui is our most honoured guest ?”
Tarquin :” Gary,I think I’ve heard of this guy, maybe a year or so ago .”
Gary :”Hang on she’s talking to Gustav.” Unfortunately her comments were inaudible.” Sorry Terry old boot what were you saying?”
Tarquin :” During my stay in Kuala Lumpur there was chap called Linghui who was the go to guy for anything from automatic weapons to fake currency.It’s not such a common name.” Gary laughed.
Gary :” There are a lot of Chinese me old fruit….” He never finished they were both straining to hear what sounded like a whisper. It was Gustav.
Gustav :” I do not understand why you all tip toe around him. There are many sources and they do not come with special conditions.”
Heather :” Gustav you are blethering again. We know you believe you’ve had your nose put out of joint.”
Gustav :”I’m pointing out we could make more progress without this millstone to carry “
Pru :” Millstone, what millstone, can you explain Heather?”
Heather :” He’s playing silly buggers Pru.”
Gustav :” The millstone is the special proviso about Christian Norris.”

Detlef :” So the rumour is Chris is sick and tired of the Newcastle?” Den chuckled.
Dennis :” That’s a bit strong isn’t it, he’s got Fredo to help with some of the day- to- day, that’s all?”
Detlef :” I believe it’s a bit more than that . Fredo wants to re -structure the business from the ground up apparently.”
Dennis :” Howay man ,it’s been running all right for ages. Hasn’t it?” Den was frowning.
Detlef :” I’m not so sure.One or two cracks have appeared in the last few years Fredo says .Some weaknesses were identified after certain changes were attempted by certain women ,if you recall.” Den laughed.
Dennis :” You have a way with words bonny lad .There can’t be much harm in tightening security though ?” Detlef was shaking his head.
Detlef :” The business has grown so much since Kenny Ames started it and the sources ,who are the bedrock, need looking after, and this is where Fredo says he wants to start.”
Dennis :” Well he’s in the best position to recruit the right people for that kind of job I reckon.
Detlef :”Absolutely. With all the contacts he’s made in law enforcement over the years it should be in good hands. Chris can pursue his dreams with no worries in that regard.” Den was frowning.
Dennis :” Pursue his dreams ,what’s all that about?”
Detlef :” Den if you remember when I first located Christian he was one of the jet set. Moving from one festival to another, in and out of recording studios ,promoting his favourite rock groups between red carpet appearances. I think he wants that back .He’s mentioned some plans for the mining business in conversation with Kenny Brown as well.”
Dennis :” How do you know all this?”
Detlef :”Mostly things Kenny Brown told me ,but Chris has been ,what’s the word, chatty, recently. Just the other day he was telling me and Kenny some news he’d had about trouble at one of the mines and that he was sick to death of it.Kenny reckons it’s been getting worse lately.” Nev pricked up his ears at the Detlef’s last remark.
Neville :”What kind of trouble?”
Detlef :” It’s mostly in the Caribbean ,and when the work force down tools production stops and customers start complaining.”
Neville :” But CWN was always seen to be one of the better firms I thought?” Detlef nodded.
Detlef :” True, and things were running fairly well especially after the new process was introduced you recall when Moxey trained all those guys?” Dennis was nodding in agreement.
Dennis :” But you’re going to tell us something went wrong?”
Detlef :” Exactly. The Chinese competition didn’t like it when CWN then took more market share ,especially in the lithium and rare earth business.”
Dennis :” The locals were over the moon with the deals they got from Chris, surely that must count for something?”
Detlef :” Yes, and that is also part of the problem according to Kenny Brown.The FBI are all over strategic materials and the resulting geo- politics just adds to his problem.”
Dennis :” So where does this leave Chris?” Detlef raised his eyebrows.

For some time he and his group had orchestrated a public relations exercise aimed at people he considered decision makers. Offers of grants, soft loans, and hosted seminars, were made to a wide range of bodies including charities, museums, educational committees, local councils, sports clubs and orphanages. The list went on. Over time the process had grown and Stefano believed they must now expand. They would cover more ground, using the same approach in other countries, and present a wholesome ,more public face to the market, and that face was to be hers.
Stefano was clearly proud of what he saw as a personal success and listed to her the various bodies in receipt of grants and loans.He did not comment beyond saying how he had been of assistance to them, behind the scenes ,when staff vacancies occurred. Pru knew just the sort of people Stefano would install and in time the influence they could exert if called upon.
Pru also realised why Gustav called Chris a millstone.She was aware of the history of the Stille family having been briefed by the OED when Christian had entered their lives.
Linghui wanted Chris left alone. He felt responsible in some strange way because the Chinese security he had engaged for the Stille family business had been subsequently infiltrated all those years ago,
Additionally Gustav could see the immense value that ownership of Amesec could bring and Pru was sure he would push for this irregardless of the obstacles, because the prize was enormous.
Tarquin was awakened by Gary holding a cup of coffee.
Gary :” Rise and shine young man .Time we were going.” Tarquin took the coffee, gratefully.
Tarquin:” What happened?”
Gary :” Nothing much .I disposed of the bug Maria left outside after we did our last roadies’ gig .The guests appear to still be in residence when I looked a few minutes ago.”
Tarquin :” Makes you wonder if this trip was worthwhile.”
Gary :” Well we know that Pru is safe .”
Tarquin :” Well you assume that.”
Gary :” I saw her at the window just now. Look on the bright side Terry .She’ll be in touch . Be patient.”

Oz is slowly making his way back to the house after a leisurely walk in the nearby woods.He sees Sara sat on the veranda drinking coffee.
Sara :”Hi petal, good walk? Shall I pour coffee for you?”
Oz :” Thanks pet. Aye, it was canny stroll .It’s champion round here isn’t it?” He sat down next to her and drank his coffee.
Sara :” It’s very peaceful. I’ve just realised how long it’s been since I thought much about the future.” She looked pensive.
Oz :”Anything in particular you had in mind ?” He was frowning .
Sara :” I’ve just seen you playing with your hearing aid. Again. You know what the ornithologist said.” Oz laughed.
Oz :”Nice try petal, you were checking, yes he’s an audiologist ,no interest in birds, as far as I know. He told me not to play with myself.” Sara laughed .

Oz :” I told Den I could hear properly again.” Sara looked close to tears.

Debbie :” Do you think they’ll be okay?” Detlef laughed.
Detlef :”I think the twins will be fine, and your dad is safe, for the time being.”

At the beach Nikki is sitting down ,very much out of breath and Neville is laughing like a drain.
Neville :’ I told you, they’re nuts about football.” Nikki gave him a withering look.
Nikki :”Yes you did, and more than once I recall.” She panted and waited until her breathing slowed before continuing. "Nev ,they’re getting very close to the water!” Nev shouted for the lads to come back, which they did and immediately wanted the snacks they’d brought and to know why Nikki hadn’t got a football shirt like their’s.” They seem happy Nev?” Nev nodded looking out to sea.
Neville :”Kids are adaptable pet.It’s just as well.”

Kenny :” Yes. He’s talking to me because he knows we had her under surveillance and know her better than most.”
Chris :” You just said know not knew?”
Kenny :” She washed up on a beach in Majorca, no dna yet , so id only from documentation found on the body.”
Chris :” Where are you Kenny?”
Kenny :” At the airport.” Chris laughed.
Chris :”Okay Kenny ,you know what to do.”
Stefano had acted immediately after an urgent call from a friend in Majorca.He arranged for the Sans Souci to be made ready to leave and informed all his guests personally.
Stefano:” I must apologise for disturbing you at this time but we must be leaving now, in two vessels.Gustav will help Heather with her luggage and Pru, we will go with Linghui ,we'll leave first.The Sans Souci will follow.”
The launch despatched by the coastguard at Palma reported no vessels were seen in the vicinity of Cabrera.They questioned the veracity of the information passed to them by the local police.
Gustav and Heather travelled northeast for several hours then transferred to helicopter for the rest of their journey. Pru was informed they would spend the the night at Palma because their ultimate journey to Varna would be completed by air.
Stefano took advantage of the time to question Pru closely about her duties at OED, and about Christian Norris.
Pru :” This is more like an interrogation than a chat Stefano?” He chuckled.
Stefano :” Sorry my dear but you must understand the nature of our business ,and your part in it ,require careful planning at every stage. I must ask you answer my questions as thoroughly as you can.” He continued ,eventually moving on to the function of Amesec and particularly of Christian Norris’s plans for the business. Pru was showing signs of impatience.
Pru :” I think I understand your ultimate goal but surely this timescale is your biggest obstacle?” Stefano laughed.
Stefano :” I think I understand your impatience my dear but is the timescale a problem for me ,or for you?” He looked at her with a serious expression. Pru returned his look with one of puzzlement.
Pru :” My perception of this whole thing is based on a knowledge of Amesec and it’s history. Correct me if I’m wrong but you wish to utilise the Amesec principle for a very different application. It will not translate the way you want, the intel is acquired and used in a unique way and not at the speed you need.Your cash flow and profitability will suffer .” Stefano sat and looked at her open mouthed. Pru was relieved at his expression as she had wondered if he was becoming suspicious.
Neville continued to watch Nikki and the twins playing on the beach,She had confided her new assignment would take her first to Cuba then around central America, perhaps even a visit to Venezuela. He realised he would miss her, and immediately felt guilty. Remembering Dens’ remarks didn’t help.He heard someone shouting.It was Nikki.
Nikki :” Nev it’s your turn in goal.”
When the match was called a draw the twins objected and demanded to play again .Nev said it was time for a rest and took off his shirt, and looked at Nikki.
Neville :” Here you go pet. Try it on .It looks much better on you than me.”

Carla :”If you’re sure it’s not going to create a problem over there I’ll be so happy to see you .We have a lot to talk about and I have some gossip I want to share.Your good friend Alistair has been making waves recently. He has been volunteering at a local monastery.” Chris couldn’t help laughing.
Chris :” You are serious, I say this because he hinted at a trip to those parts when he told me confidentially about his daughter.”
Carla :” Indeed. I understand, it will not be repeated, his presence came with a guarantee of anonymity but fat chance if a certain someone leaked something to a newspaper in La Paz.”
Chris :”That is sad .I know the guy has a past but if he is really wanting to turn his life around….”
Carla :” That’s one of the things I like about you Chris, you always see the best in people.”
Tarquin had accepted Chris’s invitation for a meeting before leaving for San Pedro to see Carla.
Chris :” I am grateful to you Tarquin I know you are busy ,but Kenny Brown has let me know you may be able to put my mind at rest about my friend Neville Hope.” Tarquin grimaced.
Tarquin :” I have a lot of time for Kenny as you know and he’s not wrong about many things.However I am working for DEA and there are some things I will not divulge I’m sure you understand. But I know Neville and I feel sorry for him,too.”
Chris :” How so ?” Tarquin sighed.
Tarquin :”This all started some time back when a certain Chinese guy poisoned Nev at the time he actually had me in his sights. Unfortunately it didn’t stop there. There was a plan to frame Neville’s wife Pru. Some of this is ,shall we say sensitive ,and if questioned I haven’t told you. It was made to look as though she was poisoning her husband and hence make life so difficult for her she would leave him and the children.” Chris was looking unconvinced.
Chris :”You can prove this Tarquin, this would make Neville collateral damage?”
Tarquin :” As a matter of fact it would not be allowed because there is another factor to take into account. What I can say is Pru’s recruitment to the criminal fraternity was, maybe encouraged is the right word.This gang or criminal group, decided Pru would be a good addition to their public face but were unaware that UK intelligence had plans for her too.They were to recruit her and she would be their man ,more accurately woman, on the inside .”
Chris :” So Pru is spying for UK intelligence ?”
Tarquin :” Yes, but Neville is not aware of any of it. He thinks his wife has left him and the boys ,and that she tried to poison him.The clincher for Nev was the blood tests carried out courtesy of Alistair Fraser that identified the drug. Nev believes Pru was responsible .We know she wasn’t .We know who administered it and how.”
Chris :” What’s Fraser got to do with this?” Tarquin sighed again.
Tarquin :” Right now nothing at all, but at the time ,strange as it may seem ,he was doing the right thing and had Neville’s best interests at heart .”
Chris :”So what’s going to happen .Will Nev find out the truth?” Tarquin shook his head.
Tarquin :”I very much doubt it. Even assuming Pru is successful and the group is destroyed I doubt she will ever be able to assume her previous life.”It was Chris’s turn to sigh.

Dagmar :” You’re absolutely sure that’s what Detlef said?”
Dennis :” Yes. Giving the running of Amesec to Fredo was the first phase, and he was going to see Carla for a few days, maybe that’s the next stage ?” Dagmar looked mystified.
Dagmar :” What do you mean ?”
Dennis :” Square it with the girlfriend, after all it affects her as well.She won’t want to be jetting around the globe every other day.”
Dagmar :” You’re right Dennis, especially now her business is doing so well.” It was Dennis’s turn to look mystified.
Dennis :”What do you mean doing so well?”
Dagmar :” Kenny told me Chris was excited at how much interest there’d been for her Inca Tours.” Den nodded and rolled his eyes.” Don’t dismiss it Dennis, she knows her stuff ,she’s written about the history before the Spanish came.” Dennis changed the subject.
Dennis :”Has Debbie said anything about Neville since Nikki left?”
Tarquin was thinking about his conversation with Chris.He had expected more of a reaction when he revealed that Heather Lane was not dead and the body found was that of Gary’s agent, Maria with false id.
Tarquin :” You seem distracted Chris,I thought you’d be intrigued with my news.Heather Lane was a pain for you at one time was she not?”
Chris :” True, and I’m sorry Tarquin. I am distracted. A lot has happened recently and I find that in re jigging my life certain problems have arisen.” Tarquin was surprised and also curious that Chris was revealing so much personal detail.” Sorry Tarquin I’m a poor host and I did ask you here. I’m trying to make adjustments that will allow me more personal freedom.” Tarquin nodded.
Tarquin :”You mean like bringing Fredo into the Amesec business?”
Chris :” Yes, that’s part of it. There is huge societal responsibility with this business and attempts in the past to acquire it underline it’s value.I need to guarantee it remains beyond the grasp of the criminal element.”
Tarquin :” Is there anything I can do to help?”
Chris :” Perhaps there is.”
When Barry heard about Nev’s current problems at first he couldn’t believe his ears.
Barry :”Moxey are you sure about this, it doesn’t sound like the Pru I used to know. Nev must be devastated?”
Moxey :” He’s not in a good place right now, but I heard that Nikki Myles has been helping out with the bairns.”
Barry :”The journalist who did the Startup story?”
Moxey :”One and the same.I think she might have designs on our Nev.”

Moxey :” I’m not so sure mate.From where I am ,I think Nev doesn’t see a way back for him and Pru.”

After more failed attempts to reach Oz by ‘phone, Moxey has driven to Wooler to talk to him directly.He rings the antiquated door bell and is greeted by Sara.
Moxey :”Hello pet, I’m here to see if Oz can come out to play. Is he around?” Sara smiled and shook her head.
Sara :” He’s not here right now but he won’t be far, come in and I’ll make some coffee.He won’t be long I’m sure.”Moxey grinned and followed her inside, looking around.
Moxey :”It’s nice here, very restful, the drive down here was….” Moxey stopped when he could see Sara was near to tears.” Hey pet, what up?” She tried to pull herself together and rubbed her eyes.
Sara :” Don’t worry Mox, it’s just me ,I think maybe I’ve not completely come to terms with losing Brian yet. Oz has been taking long walks this last week or so.He said it helps to clear his head.He needs to get back to his roots he says.”

Chris :”The processing of our raw intel is a completely separate thing and we have already put in place added protection at the front end as we call it.”

Chris :” There were attempts to locate and identify the Amesec intel sources on at least two occasions, both failed but served to highlight some vulnerabilities .I personally took care of it. I felt responsible .” He looked at Tarquin.” Barbara Hunt and Heather Lane. Without protection Amesec will not work, the source of our material would dry up. However ,I think there may be a way and this is where I believe you could help.”

Carla is waiting for Chris in her shop in San Pedro de Atacama.He is being driven from the airport by her friend Pablo .She glances at her watch just as a car pulls up outside. It is Pablo with a special passenger.
Carla :” You look a little tired my love, was it such a bad journey?” Carla looked at Chris closely.
Chris :” I’m glad to be here at last. Travelling from that airport is an experience and I know it’s the closest.” He turned as he heard Pablo driving away.” Kurt favoured the other place but that’s over a two hour drive.” He laughed at Carla’s worried expression. She smiled in return.
Carla :”Anyway you’re here now Chris so let’s just sit and enjoy a cool drink in the sunshine.You can tell me all your news.”
The crew of a fishing boat just a little east of Varna on the Black Sea ,looked up at the sound of a helicopter heading north. The last of the crew to turn his eyes back to the nets saw a body falling ,arms and legs flailing. He shouted to his crewmates. On reaching the spot it was clear their efforts were in vain.They found the body of a woman and it appeared her neck was broken. They stayed until a launch from the naval base arrived and took the body back to Varna.

Oz :” Is there any coffee left pet?” Sara went to the kitchen ,shaking her head as Oz sat down. Moxey was frowning as he looked at Oz.
Moxey :” Is everything okay mate?” Oz looked up quickly.
Oz :” Aye ,why shouldn’t it be ,has Sara been saying different?” Moxey was surprised at his outburst.
Moxey :” No , no, Oz. What’s up lad, you’re looking worried ?”
Oz :” Sorry, sorry Mox, I’ve just got a lot on my mind at the moment.Surely you didn’t come all this way to see me, what’s wrong?”
Moxey :” No not entirely. It's Nev. I wanted to know your thoughts about his problem.Have you heard owt since you last saw him ?” Oz was frowning at him.
Oz :”Nah. Should I have like?” Moxey looked at Oz in amazement shaking his head.
Moxey:” Nev’s in real trouble ,I thought you might have a bit of sympathy!” Moxey got up to leave and saw Sara coming back out of the kitchen.” That’s me away now Sara, thanks for the coffee .”
Sara “ Let us know how you get on and if you see Nev tell him our thoughts are with him.”
Moxey :”I will, cheerio.”
Carla is waiting for Chris in her shop in San Pedro de Atacama.He is being driven from the airport by her friend Pablo .She glances at her watch just as a car pulls up outside. It is Pablo with a special passenger.
Carla :” You look a little tired my love, was it such a bad journey?” Carla looked at Chris closely.
Chris :” I’m glad to be here at last. Travelling from that airport is an experience and I know it’s the closest.” He turned as he heard Pablo driving away.” Kurt favoured the other place but that’s over a two hour drive.” He laughed at Carla’s worried expression. She smiled in return.
Carla :”Anyway you’re here now Chris so let’s just sit and enjoy a cool drink in the sunshine.You can tell me all your news.”
The crew of a fishing boat just a little east of Varna on the Black Sea ,looked up at the sound of a helicopter heading north. The last of the crew to turn his eyes back to the nets saw a body falling ,arms and legs flailing. He shouted to his crewmates. On reaching the spot it was clear their efforts were in vain.They found the body of a woman and it appeared her neck was broken. They stayed until a launch from the naval base arrived and took the body back to Varna.
