Convention 2013
The 2013 Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Convention weekend
has been and gone, and what a weekend it was!
Over the weekend of the 20th of September 2013 , 4
events were organised to celebrate 30 years of this iconic
show. Stars of the show came from far and wide to join in
the celebration. On the evening of the 21st, the ‘Brickies
Banquet’ brought together Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Julia
Tobin, Melanie Hill, Lesley Saint-John, Val McLane, Franc
Roddam, Ian la Frenais, Dick Clement, Stan Hey, Roger
Bamford and Tony Charles for the first time in years, to
help turn the weekend in to something very special for
fans who could attend.
The biggest surprise of the night was for the writers of Auf
Wiedersehen, Pet Ian la Frenais & Dick Clement who were
awarded for their Outstanding Contribution to Comedy
and Drama by the Royal Television Society North East and
The Border. Stars who couldn’t be in attendance because
of work commitments, made sure they made the effort to
record interviews and segments for fans to enjoy. Tim
Spall, Jimmy Nail and Christopher Fairbank spoke about
how the show has changed their lives over the years. ‘The
Hut’ was mentioned and how it wasn’t cleaned for 12
months, and became almost unbearable to film in during
1982/83. We also got to hear from the cast about how Gary
Holton and Pat Roach’s deaths affected their lives. A
touching moment from Kevin Whately brought tears to the
eyes of fans who were there.
The biggest cheer on the night was for……Lesley Saint-John!
After meeting her first on the Friday night, I was telling her
how big of a star she was to myself and Auf Wiedersehen,
Pet fans. Although I think Lesley didn’t believe me, the roar
of the crowd when she was introduced was massive, and
enough to prove me right!
