‘Aye, aye this is Angela....’
Lisa Salkeld/Whyte played Angela Patterson in both Series 1
and Series 2 of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. We managed to find
Lisa with the help of Facebook and one of her friends, Jason
Dwyer which we would like to thank for his help in assisting
the Fansite. Enjoy this 10 Questions with Lisa and find out
what it was like working on the first 2 Series of Auf
Wiedersehen, Pet.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet 1983 - 2016
Q1. How did you get the part, were you
approached?
A. It was actually my uncle, Terry Joyce, who was
approached by the Auf Pet production team [he's an
actor/comedian and had starred in local productions
like Supergran, Byker Grove etc...] They asked him if
he knew any 7ish year old girls who might be
interested in a small part in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! He
thought of me [I'd not done anything like it before]
and - although terrified - I went along for the
audition, did a brief interview, told a few jokes and
acted out a part, and amazingly, an hour or so later,
was chosen for the part - amazingly because there
were at least 10 other girls there - thought I'd have no
chance!
Q2. The 2nd Series is one of the greatest and a
fan favourite. Did you realise at the time that
you were starring in such a big TV show?
A. I was in both the first and second series. Actually
the very first episode [boating lake scene in London]
with Dennis and my on-screen brother Kevin [Lee
Proud] so at that time none of us could possibly have
known how big Auf Wiedersehen, Pet would get. Since
I was only 8 years old of course I had even less idea
what all the fuss was about.
Q3. Do you remember filming those scenes
with Tim Healy in Newcastle?
A. Yes I remember it all very well, both the first and
second series. It was a great one-off experience which
I'm so glad I got the opportunity of. I was really
fortunate to get that chance, just an ordinary school
girl at the time, and its still a great talking point even
now 30+ years on!
Q4. Did you have fun filming?
A. Great fun! It was quite hard work too - obviously
we were just kids so we had to repeat the scenes
quite a few times till the team were happy with them.
The actors were brilliant with us though, kept us
laughing and were really kind to us. We got private
tuition during filming breaks when we were down in
London so although we got time off school it
definitely wasn't a holiday, lol.
Q5. You only starred with one of the lads in the
scenes, Tim Healy. Did you meet any of the
other cast?
A. In the first series I starred with Tim Healy and his
wife [my on-screen Mam Vera] Caroline Hutchinson,
sadly now deceased. She was really lovely. In the
second series it was Oz's wife Marjorie in the scene
along with me and Tim - she was hilarious, a real
character. I got to meet nearly all the cast, Oz,
Wayne, Neville, Bomber, Moxey. Still have my
autograph book with all of their messages to me - all
a great bunch of guys!
Q6. Did you film any scenes that didn't make it
on screen?
A. No, everything we filmed made it on screen
[although like I said, we took a LOT of attempts to get
it right - especially that scene in the boat in the very
first episode].
Q7. Do you have any pictures from filming you
can share with fans?
A. Yeah, I've got some great photos I can share -
you'll have to give me a bit time to dig them out of
the loft though!
Q8. Was it easy filming the scenes? Had you
acted before?
A. I was a complete novice - and I think it showed, ha
ha!
Q9. Did Auf Wiedersehen, Pet give you any
experience or urge to go on to more TV
projects?
A. Yes - I went on to do a couple of adverts
[cornflakes which never made on the TV lol] and had
a couple of auditions for other stuff, but strangely
enough it was a good 30 years later before I'd 'star'
on TV again - in a really great locally produced sitcom
in my home town which you may have heard of -
'Hebburn' on BBC2 last year! Would have loved to
have done more but back then school took priority
unfortunately!
Q10. What is one memory that stands out from
your time on Auf Wiedersehen, Pet?
A. The whole thing was such a great exciting
adventure for an 8 year old kid as you can probably
imagine - I think I'd have to say getting to meet all the
real stars, and just being in the whole TV studio
environment. Like I said above, its still a great talking
point now - and whenever I get one of those daft
embarrassing questions we all hate along the lines of
"Tell us something interesting about yourself that
others might not know about you blah blah blah...." I
always have this great answer to give thanks to Auf
Wiedersehen, Pet!
