Series 2 Timeline of Events

A lot of fans want to know the dates of certain things. From dates of filming, to script readings, when was this filmed etc. Thanks to a lot of people, including Stan Hey writer of episodes from Series 1 and 2, we can now put some dates, to scenes, script readings, rehearsals and a lot more. If you have anything to add, and you know the date is exact, or within a few days, then please get in touch. Many thanks to Stan Hey for taking the time to note down all the dates from Series 2, and also Central Crew member Colin Russell. March 19 1984: Writers Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Stan Hey meet at Chanterelle Restaurant to discuss future solo idea for Jimmy Nail, and ‘Auf’ ideas – though Series Two remains noncommissioned. (Central sells Elstree to BBC, moves HQ/builds studios at Nottingham). Sept 5 1984: Clement/La Frenais/Hey and Producer Martin McKeand meet – Series Two has go ahead from Central. September 17 1984: Auf Two contracts issued! Oct 30 1984: Script meeting Clement/La Frenais/Hey/Mckeand and director Roger Bamford. Writing begins on Series Two. No Falklands, no Saudi Arabia, just England (9 episodes) and Spain (4 episodes) Dec 8 1984: Auf Reunion Party/Cast/Writers/Directors/Producer. Dec 31 1984: Episode 5, Series Two delivered: ‘A Home From Home’ (Hey). Jan 1985: Clement La Frenais writing Episodes 1-4, 8, 9; Hey writing Episodes 5, 6, 7 (‘The Thornley Manor Trilogy’). Episodes 10- 13 TBA. February 21-26 1985: Writers, Producer and Director in Spain on story recce – meet real Costa del Criminals in Fuengirola. April 1 1985: Read-through, Episodes 1-5 (St. Saviour’s Church Hall, Warwick Avenue, London) April 12 1985: Read-through, Episodes 6-9 (Nottingham studio and location filming begins). May 14th 1985: Filming in Redmile at The Windmill aka The Barley Mow, during the day up until 7pm. See proof May 16th 1985: Filming in Redmile at The Windmill aka The Barley Mow, during the hours 11am to 11pm. See proof May 17th 1985: Filming in Redmile at The Windmill aka The Barley Mow, during the hours 11am to 11pm. See proof August 22nd 1985: Filming takes place in Denton at ‘The Cross Keys’ the fictional Hotel as seen in Series 2.* August 27th - 30th 1985: Various location filming done in and around Newcastle. September 16 1985: Read-through Episodes 10-13 (Spain). Filming begins. (Exterior Scenes only) October 25 1985: Gary Holton dies. Filming in Nottingham halted. November 1985: Scenes and sequences rewritten to ‘match’ Spanish footage of ‘Wayne’. Interior sequences use double where necessary. December 19 1985: Series Two filming ends. February 11 1986: Press Launch of Series Two at BAFTA. February 21 1986: Series Two begins transmission, 9pm. May 16 1986: Last Episode of Series Two transmitted. Party at Witzend Offices. *Central Crew member Colin Russell: “I well remember this location, we were there on the 22nd August 1985. The camera van was parked opposite at the triangle of grass by the main road. I remember it because we listened to the radio about the Manchester aircraft fire that had happened that morning, costing 55 lives...”
